This artwork draws inspiration from classic Bengali Renaissance portraits, where quiet expressions and composed postures convey depth beyond words. I was particularly drawn to the sense of stillness and tradition that such portraits embody.

The figure’s serene expression and gently crossed arms suggest a moment of patient anticipation—almost as though she awaits a call or presence just beyond the frame. There is a subtle narrative in that pause, one that feels both intimate and timeless.

The warm ochre tones of the background, combined with soft light filtering through a doorway, reflect the simplicity and familiarity of everyday Indian courtyard life. This setting enhances the emotional warmth and grounding of the composition.

Through oil pastels, I explored the richness of colour and texture—blending the deep maroon and violet hues of the sari, accented with a delicate gold tilak and green bangles. Each element comes together to celebrate cultural identity, grace, and quiet strength.

Maid in Waiting is a reflection of stillness with meaning—where elegance, tradition, and emotion exist in perfect harmony.
