What inspired me most was the extraordinary contrast that exists here. Along the same riverbank, people gather to pray, celebrate, reflect, mourn, and embrace life’s many transitions. It is a place where beginnings and endings coexist naturally, creating an atmosphere that is both deeply spiritual and profoundly human.
I chose pen and ink as the medium for this artwork because of its timeless character and honesty. The intricate linework and detailed cross-hatching allowed me to capture the architectural beauty of the Ghats, the rhythm of the river, and the layered stories embedded within the city’s landscape. The sepia tones further enhance the sense of history and permanence, echoing the timeless spirit of Varanasi itself.
